What will you see at Chumphon Pinnacle?
The top of the main pinnacle, at 14 meters, is completely covered in anemones, pink under a light, home to pink anemonefish and small shrimp. All around, the schools circle: chevron barracudas by the hundreds in tight columns, curious batfish that come up to divers, and fusiliers hunted by giant trevallies and Spanish mackerel. Great barracudas stay alone, on the edges. Giant groupers hold under the overhangs and moray eels in the cracks; titan triggerfish guard their nests on the plateaus, and parrotfish, trumpetfish and butterflyfish are everywhere. On the sand at the foot of the pinnacle, a zebra shark rests now and then. Whale sharks come to feed above the site from March to October. Bull sharks, regular here fifteen years ago, still pass by once in a while, at depth.

What is diving like at Chumphon Pinnacle?
The site is a group of granite pinnacles laid out in an oval from north to south and linked by rocky ridges. The main pinnacle rises from the sand at 35 or 36 meters to 14 meters below the surface; the satellite pinnacles and boulders around it go deeper, to 40 meters and beyond, and the site is too big for a single dive. Current often sweeps across the pinnacle, light to moderate, and it is what keeps the schools active. The top can be dived with Open Water, within the 18-meter limit; the base and the satellites require Advanced. Visibility tops 20 meters in season, often 30. The site is in open sea: you descend and ascend on the mooring line, and you have to factor in the crowds, with several boats at once in high season.
When to dive Chumphon Pinnacle?

Koh Tao can be dived all year, and Chumphon Pinnacle is on the dive centers' schedule almost every morning. The best period runs from March to September: calm seas, water at 29 or 30 °C, visibility of 20 to 30 meters. Whale sharks show up from March to May and from August to October, peaking in May and August, when plankton gathers above the pinnacle. The northeast monsoon, in November and December, stirs up the gulf and brings visibility down to 5 or 10 meters; trips are canceled on days of heavy swell. October is a rainy transition month, but still diveable.

Koh Tao is reached by sea. From Chumphon, served by AirAsia flights, the Lomprayah catamaran takes 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours to Mae Haad, for THB 600 to 700; from Koh Samui, served by Bangkok Airways, allow 2 hours by boat, and 3 to 4 hours from Surat Thani. From Bangkok, Lomprayah sells a combined bus and boat ticket, a full day of travel.

Why has Chumphon Pinnacle been Koh Tao's top dive site since 1991?
Koh Tao, 21 square kilometers in the Chumphon Archipelago, has lived off diving since the early 1990s: Big Blue Diving has been taking its divers to Chumphon Pinnacle since 1991. The site is named after Chumphon province, on the mainland coast opposite, not after the island. For fifteen years it was the meeting point of the gulf's bull sharks, which have since become rare; the whale sharks still come. Today it is the most requested site on the island, and the busiest in high season, hence the appeal of the dawn departures.
What can you see on a Chumphon Pinnacle dive?
The classic dive goes down the line to the main pinnacle, heads for the base at 30 meters for the giant groupers and the sand where zebra sharks sleep, then spirals back up the walls, through the schools of barracudas and batfish, to the carpet of anemones on the top. A second dive explores the satellite pinnacles, to the north or south, deeper and less crowded, where giant trevallies hunt. The safety stop is done on the line, eyes on the blue: that is where you see the whale shark coming.
How do you photograph the Chumphon Pinnacle anemones?
At 14 meters, the anemones look brown; a light or a strobe brings back their pink, and the pink anemonefish pose without fleeing. Use wide-angle for the barracuda columns, shot from below against the light, and for the batfish that come very close to divers. Photograph titan triggerfish from a distance: they charge when you get near the nest. For the whale shark, keep your distance and let it pass; the shot is a side view, in daylight.
Our tip
Take the first boat out: this is the busiest site on Koh Tao, and groups arrive from 9 a.m. Go down to the base of the pinnacle first, then spiral back up. During the safety stop, watch the blue: that is where the whale shark passes.
