Giftun Islands

EgyptCentral Red Sea, EgyptReefOpen Water

Giftun Kebir and Giftun Soraya are two desert islands off Hurghada, ringed by reefs less than an hour and a half away by boat. You drift along the walls, circle the coral towers, and beginners learn the ropes here. It is Hurghada's everyday dive, and the cheapest in Egypt.

Why dive the Giftun Islands?

  • The drift along the east wall of Small Giftun, between 18 and 30 meters, with pelagics in the blue
  • Erg Somaya: coral towers covered in soft corals and sea fans, and a chimney full of glassfish
  • Banana Reef and the shallow plateau, perfect for a refresher or a first dive
  • Sites less than an hour and a half away by boat, dived every day
  • The cheapest base in Egypt for diving

What will you see at the Giftun Islands?

The Giftun reefs pack in the classic Red Sea fauna, dense and easy to see. The Small Giftun wall, exposed to the current, draws barracudas, snappers, trevallies and tuna in the blue, while its soft corals shelter hawksbill turtles, morays and lionfish. At Erg Somaya, the coral towers reaching into the blue are covered in anthias, butterflyfish of every species and schools of silversides, and the chimney on the plateau overflows with glassfish. On the sandy plateaus, bluespotted ribbontail rays slip under the acropora tables. Dolphins sometimes show up during the crossing, though no one can ever promise them.

What is diving like at the Giftun Islands?

Every level finds its site. The Small Giftun wall is a drift dive, with entry from the boat at the north end and pickup by zodiac, between 18 and 30 meters, in a current that can pick up: Advanced recommended. Erg Somaya is dived from the anchored boat or as a drift: the plateau slopes gently to 22 to 30 meters, with a chimney at the northeast corner, and the tower itself, from 5 to 15 meters, serves for the safety stop; Open Water accepted, Advanced for the deep towers. Banana Reef is a shallow coral garden with no current, where beginners and first-timers go. Visibility is 20 to 30 meters everywhere.

When to dive the Giftun Islands?

idealgoodnot recommended

The islands are dived all year: the water drops to 22°C in February and March, when a 5 mm wetsuit is welcome, and rises to 29°C in August. Visibility holds between 20 and 30 meters. The north wind blows hard in winter and sometimes makes the east side of Small Giftun uncomfortable; dive centers then switch to sheltered sites along the coast or at Big Giftun. From March to November the sea is usually flat, and summer, despite the heat on land, is a good season underwater.

How to get to the Giftun Islands?

The islands sit opposite Hurghada, about twelve kilometers offshore. Boats leave from the marina or the hotel jetties between 8 and 9 a.m., after the transfers, take 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter depending on the site, and return around 4 p.m. after two dives and lunch on board. Hurghada has direct flights from France, under five hours; El Gouna to the north, and Makadi or Sahl Hasheesh to the south, share the same boats with a transfer. The full visa, US$25, is available on arrival or online.

Which hotels to choose near the Giftun Islands?

Where are the Giftun Islands?

Giftun Kebir, the big one, is closer to the coast; Giftun Soraya, the small one, lies farther east, facing the open sea. Both are flat and barren, with no water and no inhabitants, and ringed by a fringing reef that drops into the blue on the exposed side. From Hurghada marina you can see them on the horizon. Orange Bay beach and the Mahmya camp, on Big Giftun, host the snorkeling trips; divers head for the reefs around the two islands and the ergs that extend them.

What are the best dive sites in the Giftun Islands?

The east wall of Small Giftun is the signature dive: a wall that drops well beyond 30 meters, drift dived from north to south, soft corals within reach and pelagics in the blue. Just north of the site known as Police Station, the wall turns into a plateau: this is Erg Somaya, 75 minutes from central Hurghada. A coral tower rises to 5 meters below the surface; the plateau slopes down in sand to 22 to 30 meters, with a chimney full of glassfish at the northeast corner; farther north, a line of towers covered in soft corals and sea fans reaches into the blue, among the most photogenic in the area. Banana Reef, finally, is the easy beginners' garden, shallow and sheltered.

What other reefs do Hurghada boats pair with Giftun?

Hurghada boats pair Giftun with the neighboring reefs. Abu Ramada, to the southeast, lines up its ergs and its "aquarium", Gota Abu Ramada, a shallow reef often used for the second dive. Fanous, east and west of its lighthouse, is the refresher site, with coral heads at 15 meters. Farther north, Umm Gamar and Shaab Abu Nugar offer quieter walls, and Sha'ab el Erg, off El Gouna, is the lagoon where dolphins come to rest. The Abu Nuhas wrecks, finally, are two and a half hours away by boat and make a separate day trip.

What does a dive day from Hurghada look like?

Hotel pickup around 7:30 a.m., boarding at the marina, departure around 9 a.m. The first dive is late in the morning on the most exposed site, usually Small Giftun, then lunch on board, at anchor in a sheltered bay. The second dive is early in the afternoon on a calmer site, Erg Somaya, Banana Reef or Abu Ramada, and you are back at the marina around 4 p.m. Dive centers include park fees, lunch and drinks in their packages; equipment rents by the day.

Our tip

Ask for Small Giftun as a drift in the morning, then Erg Somaya or Banana Reef for the second dive. Avoid the big hotel jetties on Fridays, when families head out. Nitrox, at €7 a tank, is worth it on the wall.
